So where did this crazy story come from?
When I graduated with a degree in Creative Writing and a minor in Film, I quickly realized what a lot of creative folks realize – it is hard to get a job!
I got turned down for film jobs, I got turned down for writing jobs…I applied for package delivering jobs and I got turned down for those too. In the meantime, I worked a lot of temp jobs, and got introduced into the land of spreadsheets, fluorescent lights, and endless cubicles. I did a lot of data entry, some customer service, and with most of the jobs I had a lot of downtime.
I spent that time imagining a way out of those boring offices, and wrote a lot of short stories involving magic realism. One was about a vending machine that sold confidence. One was about a man who builds a livable habitat inside his cubicle, and decides to never leave. And one was about a really fast filer named June, who became a champion in the underground world of competition filing.
The idea of this magical, surreal office environment always stayed with me, and as I started to put together screenplay ideas, I decided to dust off some of the old stories I wrote, and assemble them into something more.
The result was All Sorts! A strange competition, a few absurd characters, and in the middle of it all a forlorn office romance.
We’re very excited to bring this to life.
